Salerno, Capital of Campania's southernmost province. The lovely port of SALERNO is much less pell-mell than Naples and, even if well off most travellers' itineraries, is in a comfortable position – making it a good base for both the Amalfi coast and the ancient site of Paestum further south. The city is situated on the gulf of the same name, backed by a high rock crowned with an ancient castle, probably built in the 2nd century B.C. The summer season is the right occasion to visit the Arechi Castle, that has been splendidly restored, and is the right place where you can live some unique events and pleasant moments in a fabulous background. Another important and prestigious monument is the Cathedral that has been containing, since 1079. St Matthew’s mortal remains. The cathedral’s interior contains numerous mosaics, paintings, works of art of great richness and laboriousness. Most of the ancient town looks at one of the best promenade of South Italy. Last but not least Salerno gastronomy is particularly tasty and can satisfy even the most demanding palates.
